Nine Spanish universities produce a disproportionate share of the engineers worth hiring. Here is what a degree from each one actually signals, ranked by how the graduates perform in real processes rather than by academic prestige.

The Best Universities for Software Engineering in Spain (2026)

If you are hiring engineers in Spain from outside the country, the university on a CV is one of the few signals you can read before you talk to anyone. The problem is that none of the names mean anything to you. UPC, UPM, UC3M, FIB: they carry as much information for a hiring manager in Boston or London as "Rensselaer" or "Loughborough" would for one in Valencia.

This is the ranking we use internally. It is not built on academic prestige or on the global league tables, which measure research output and say almost nothing about whether a graduate can ship. It is built on what we see across hiring processes: who passes technical screens, who ramps up fast, who is still performing eighteen months in.

The nine, in the order we rank them: FIB (UPC) and UPM at the top, then Granada, UPC, Complutense, UC3M, Málaga, UPV and Córdoba. What follows is what a degree from each actually signals in a hiring process.

First, though, three things about the Spanish system are worth knowing, because they change how you read every CV that crosses your desk.

How the Spanish degree system actually works

The degree is called Ingeniería Informática, and it is not "IT". The literal translation misleads English speakers badly. Informática is computer science and software engineering; a Grado en Ingeniería Informática is a four-year, 240-ECTS engineering degree with heavy mathematics, algorithms, operating systems, compilers and computer architecture. It is closer to a US bachelor's in computer engineering than to an information systems degree. A candidate who lists it has done four years of real fundamentals, not a vocational IT course.

The good schools are public. This is the reverse of the American intuition. In Spain the strongest computer science faculties sit inside public universities, they are cheap (roughly €1,000–2,500 a year in tuition depending on the region), and admission is by a score combining the school record with a national exam, the EBAU (still widely called Selectividad). Each programme publishes the mark of its last admitted student — the nota de corte — and for the schools listed below it sits near the top of the scale, so getting in is itself a filter. Private universities exist and some are decent, but a private degree in Spain does not carry the signal an Ivy League degree does in the US.

There is a second, invisible pipeline. Formación Profesional de Grado Superior — two-year applied qualifications, usually DAM (multi-platform application development) or DAW (web application development) — produces a large share of working Spanish developers. Foreign employers screen these people out because the credential does not map onto anything they recognise. That is a mistake in one direction and a shortcut in the other: FP graduates are typically productive earlier and cost less, but weaker on the fundamentals a systems-heavy role needs. Treat it as a different profile, not a lesser one.

One more caveat before the ranking. Spain has no equivalent of the US campus recruiting pipeline. There is no career fair where you sign nine graduates in a week, and new graduates rarely move cities for a first job. Where a university is located largely determines where its graduates are.

1. FIB (UPC, Barcelona): the most competitive intake in Spain

People who solve hard problems for fun. FIB is UPC's dedicated computer science faculty; entry 4 below covers the rest of UPC's engineering schools, which feed software roles for different reasons.

Not everyone who starts at FIB graduates, and that attrition is the point. There is a culture of technical excellence in the building. Students compete in ACM-ICPC and similar contests, contribute to open source and run side projects while studying.

What their graduates bring:

  • Genuine strength in competitive algorithms and optimisation.
  • Comfort working under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Real interest in the technology, not just a job.

The environment pushes students to challenge each other, and it shows. When a candidate has come through FIB, the technical floor is high enough that our screens rarely surprise us on the downside.

Where they are: Barcelona. Best fit: algorithm-heavy work, optimisation, anything with a hard technical core. English: strong; Barcelona's tech scene is international by default and much of the local industry works in English.

2. UPM (Madrid): the strongest fundamentals in the country

The fundamentals specialists.

UPM produces the country's most solid candidates in data structures and algorithms. When you need someone who understands computational complexity properly rather than from memory, this is where you look.

Their graduates stand out in:

  • Code optimisation and performance analysis.
  • Hard algorithmic problems in technical interviews.
  • Understanding what the hardware is doing underneath the code.

The ETSIINF, UPM's computing school, keeps a demanding bar, particularly in data structures, operating systems and compilers, and its teaching staff includes a number of well-regarded researchers. The result is engineers who know why things work, not just how to use them.

Where they are: Madrid. Best fit: infrastructure, systems, performance-critical backends. English: good, and Madrid's international employer base keeps it in daily use.

3. Granada: the best value in the country

Excellent training, more moderate expectations.

Granada has surprised us more each year. Candidates arrive technically excellent and, generally, with more moderate salary expectations than Madrid or Barcelona.

What we consistently see:

  • Strong grounding in AI and machine learning — the research groups there are serious.
  • Real hands-on experience through collaborations with local companies.
  • A proactive attitude and something to prove.

The ETSIIT, Granada's computing and telecoms school, has invested heavily in AI, computer vision and robotics labs, and its staff combine teaching with active research, which keeps the syllabus current.

Where they are: Granada, in Andalusia. Best fit: AI and machine learning, and any remote-first team that wants the training without the hub premium. English: solid but less exercised day to day than in Madrid or Barcelona — test it. Cost of living is far below the hubs, which is exactly why salary expectations are lower and why a remote-first employer gets the better end of it.

4. UPC's wider engineering schools (Barcelona): systems thinking and architecture

Beyond FIB: ETSETB, FME and the rest of the UPC engineering faculties.

UPC is one of our main sources of exceptional candidates. What separates its graduates is not raw technical knowledge but the ability to design systems that scale from the start.

In our processes, UPC candidates stand out in:

  • Designing distributed architectures and microservices.
  • Anticipating scalability problems before they happen.
  • Applying design patterns to concrete cases rather than reciting them.

UPC's project-based teaching means graduates arrive with a relevant technical portfolio. It is not unusual for a new graduate to have already worked on complex projects with Git, CI/CD and agile methods during their degree.

Where they are: Barcelona. Best fit: distributed systems, platform and architecture roles. English: strong, same reasons as FIB.

5. Complutense (Madrid): the most adaptable to any stack

The versatile ones.

Complutense candidates are our favourite wildcards. They have the technical flexibility to adapt to any stack in record time.

What we value most:

  • Moving between programming paradigms without friction.
  • Practical experience across several languages — Java, Python, JavaScript, C++.
  • A continuous-learning mindset visible in their personal projects.

Complutense's Facultad de Informática has modernised its labs and methods considerably. Students work with the same tooling they will use in industry: Docker, Kubernetes, modern JavaScript frameworks, cloud.

Where they are: Madrid. Best fit: product teams where the stack will change under them twice in three years. English: good.

6. UC3M (Madrid): the safest bet on English and international work

The best prepared for international teams.

If your team is multicultural or your company runs international projects, UC3M graduates fit straight in. They do not just speak fluent technical English; they arrive with a global outlook.

They stand out in:

  • Technical communication in English — documentation, code reviews, presentations.
  • Experience with remote and distributed working methods.
  • Familiarity with international development standards.

The university actively runs exchanges and dual-degree programmes with European institutions, and many of its graduates have already worked on international projects before finishing.

Where they are: Madrid. Best fit: roles that need someone client-facing or writing for a foreign audience from day one. English: the most reliable on this list — if English is your binding constraint, start here.

7. Málaga: the most product-minded graduates

Startup mindset: fast, autonomous, product-oriented.

Málaga has grown into a technology hub and it shows in its graduates. They arrive with a more product-oriented mindset than the more academic schools produce.

What sets them apart:

  • Working with little supervision in fast-moving environments.
  • Experience with MVPs and iterative development.
  • A real grasp of the lifecycle of a digital product.

Málaga's startup ecosystem — the technology park, accelerators, a busy events calendar — means many students have worked on real projects before graduating. That produces professionals who understand the business, not only the technology.

Where they are: Málaga, on the Costa del Sol. Best fit: early-stage product teams and anything needing autonomy over supervision. English: good and improving, helped by a heavily international local scene. This is the fastest-growing tech hub in Spain and the one most visible to foreign employers, largely because Google and Vodafone put cybersecurity and R&D centres there — competition for the same graduates has risen accordingly.

8. UPV (Valencia): built for large, long-lived codebases

Large-scale software engineering.

UPV candidates stand out on big, complex projects. They are used to working in large teams with formal methods.

Where they excel:

  • Automated testing and QA from the design stage.
  • Detailed, maintainable technical documentation.
  • Working with legacy code and refactoring large systems.

The ETSINF, UPV's computing school, has strong ties to large technology companies and consultancies, as well as the Valencian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Its graduates usually have experience on substantial projects during their placements, which prepares them for demanding corporate environments.

Where they are: Valencia. Best fit: enterprise-scale platforms, regulated environments, anything where the codebase will outlive the team. English: solid; Valencia's international scene has grown quickly.

9. Córdoba: reliable engineers who deliver without drama

Someone who does good work without making noise.

Córdoba closes our ranking with a profile we rate highly: solid, responsible professionals with an exceptional work ethic.

What they bring:

  • Reliability and deadlines met without drama.
  • A good grounding in programming fundamentals and databases.
  • A collaborative attitude and an easy fit into teams.

Córdoba's Escuela Politécnica Superior keeps small cohorts, which allows closer supervision. The result is graduates well trained in the basics, though they may need a little more time to get up to speed on newer tooling.

Where they are: Córdoba, Andalusia. Best fit: steady delivery roles in an established codebase. English: test it explicitly; the local market exercises it less.

What the university does not tell you

This ranking reflects our direct experience, but we have hired exceptional people from many other institutions. What actually decides a process is not the name of the university:

  • A portfolio of real projects — an active GitHub, open source contributions.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve hard technical problems.
  • A continuous-learning attitude and adaptability to new technology.
  • Soft skills: communication, teamwork, autonomy.

Plenty of the strongest engineers in Spain trained at smaller universities, at bootcamps, through Formación Profesional, or nowhere at all — and they add enormous value to teams.

For a foreign employer there is a practical version of that point. Filtering to these nine schools is a defensible shortcut when you have 300 applications and no local knowledge. It is a bad strategy, because it puts you in direct competition with every well-funded Spanish company for the same few hundred graduates a year, and it is exactly the segment with the highest salary expectations. The advantage of hiring in Spain is the depth of the market below the obvious names, not the top of it.

Frequently asked questions

Do Spanish engineers speak English?

Yes, far more reliably than in most of southern Europe, and the school-by-school notes above are the useful version of that answer. What varies is not comprehension — an engineer whose entire professional reading is in English will understand you — but speaking confidence, which tracks how international the local market is. UC3M, FIB and UPC graduates are the safest bets; Granada and Córdoba are the ones to test explicitly. If the role involves chairing meetings or writing for a foreign audience, make that a stage in the process rather than an assumption.

Is a Spanish computer science degree equivalent to a US bachelor's?

Yes. A Grado en Ingeniería Informática is a four-year, 240-ECTS qualification at EQF level 6, the same level as a bachelor's degree, and Spanish universities are Bologna-compliant, so the credits transfer cleanly. Many candidates also hold a one- or two-year Máster, which is EQF level 7.

What does a graduate from these universities cost?

Less than you expect, and more than the national average for a new graduate. Do I need to be in Spain to hire these people?

No. You can hire through an employer of record, or the person can register as self-employed and invoice you. Neither requires you to incorporate in Spain. What you cannot easily do from abroad is compete for new graduates through campus channels — that route runs on local relationships and local presence.

Which university should I filter for if I only pick one?

None of them. If you must weight something, weight the portfolio. The single most predictive signal we see is not the institution but whether the candidate has built and shipped something outside coursework.
